The West Panay Fault
The West Panay Fault, which traverses from the provinces of Aklan through Capiz and ends in the town of San Joaquin, Iloilo, can generate “a large earthquake”.
The towns near this fault are Lambunao, Janiuay, Maasin, Alimodian, Tubungan, Leon, Igbaras, Miagao and San Joaquin in Iloilo; Ibajay, Malinao, Madalag in Aklan; Pandan in Antique; and Jamindan and Tapaz in Capiz.
Almost seven decades ago, the island of Panay was hit by the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the island.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 in 1948 killed two persons and wrecked 55 churches.
Iloilo City was “the most damaged area”. The five-storey belfry of Jaro Cathedral in Jaro district was among the historic structures destroyed by the earthquake.
